LED solutions for road and motorway tunnels

Lane signals, traffic information and emergency guidance for different tunnel operating conditions.

Devices for tunnel entrances, the roadway and escape routes

Tunnel entrances, the roadway inside the tunnel and escape routes require devices with different functions and display configurations. Variable message signs, Arrow-Cross signals, backlit signs and illuminated delineators help communicate traffic conditions and identify routes.

Configurations are selected according to tunnel geometry, installation position, lighting conditions and the way the installation is managed.

Tunnel applications and devices

Arrow-Cross signals above the lanes at a tunnel entrance

Lane and entrance control

Illuminated signals communicating lane availability.

Arrow-Cross signals display the availability of individual lanes. Installed at tunnel entrances or along the roadway, they communicate lane openings and closures during normal operation, maintenance work or incident management.

Composite VMS with an alphanumeric display, Arrow-Cross signals and a graphic module

Variable message signs for tunnels

Alphanumeric messages and/or pictograms, depending on the selected configuration.

VMS communicate restrictions, roadworks, closures and changes to traffic conditions. Composite configurations combine alphanumeric displays, Arrow-Cross signals and graphic modules to show text, lane indications and pictograms in a single structure.

LED warning system for an unlit tunnel

Tunnel lighting failure warnings

Advance warnings when tunnel lighting is unavailable.

The system warns drivers before they enter an unlit tunnel. Its position and activation arrangements are defined according to the installation and the infrastructure operator’s requirements.

LED sign for tunnel exits and cross-passage directions

Exits, cross-passages and escape routes

Devices identifying routes and emergency equipment.

Exit VMS display directions and pictograms according to the specified configuration. Backlit signs identify exits, cross-passages between tunnel tubes and emergency equipment, with single-sided or double-sided versions selected according to installation position.

Illuminated delineators along the road edge inside a tunnel

Illuminated guidance along the roadway

Visual references helping drivers identify road edges.

LED delineators provide additional visual guidance along the route. Their arrangement takes account of road alignment, tunnel geometry and the points where the road boundaries need to be clearly identifiable.

Lighting along the crown of a road tunnel

Lighting control

Supervision and dimming of tunnel lighting installations.

Bloo Smart Control manages lighting through supervision, dimming and diagnostic functions. Sensor integration is defined according to the system architecture and operating requirements.

Sign legibility and configuration

Selection criteria depend on the installation position and the conditions in which drivers need to read the message.

Character height

For alphanumeric signs mounted on the tunnel crown, UNI/TR 11218:2007 recommends a minimum character height of 200 mm in motorway and other extra-urban road tunnels, and 140 mm in urban road tunnels. These recommendations apply inside the tunnel and exclude tunnel portals.

Reading distance, approach speed, number of lines and message length are also assessed alongside the project specifications. The cited values are recommendations from the Italian technical report.

Optical performance and environmental conditions

Luminance, contrast, uniformity and viewing angle contribute to message legibility. The assessment takes account of lighting conditions at the installation point and the directions from which road users view the sign.

Temperature, humidity and dust also inform the choice of construction and protection arrangements. Access to components is considered to facilitate inspection, servicing and maintenance.
